Idiocy a Criminal Offense?

The news this morning includes the sentencing of one Mr. David Irving, a British historian and Holocaust denier. Apparently, in Austria it's a crime to deny that the Holocaust happened. Let's see, Hitler oppressed free thought and speech and, in an effort to prevent the resurgence of a National Socialist agenda in their nation, Austria is now doing the same thing.

Let's get one thing straight: the man is an idiot. Enough said there. But the last time I checked, being an idiot wasn't a criminal offense. I don't know if this Austrian law is some kind of political correctness gone amok or if it's their idea of atonement for being one of the bad guys in World War II. All I know is that the purpose of the law is defeated by the law itself. Of course, Austria isn't America and I'm comparing apples and oranges, but come on.

All I can say is that I hope Mel Gibson's father doesn't travel to Vienna anytime soon...
